Banana bread is one of those universal favourites. I mean who doesn’t love the sweet deliciousness of this treat? My kids inhale this stuff!
Our favourite way to eat this banana bread is curled up with a cup of hot chocolate or tea. It’s the perfect compliment to a hot drink on a cold wintery night.
The best part, is that this recipe is highly adaptable to your preferences, and simple enough that the kids can learn how to bake. It takes only 15 minutes to prep then 50 minutes to bake.
The result is a rich, flavour packed, moist banana bread, with a crispy crust that is simply scrumptious.
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe
Ingredients
1/2 cup Butter softened
1 cup Sugar (white)
2 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla extract
1 tsp Lemon Juice
1 tbsp Molasses
1 3/4 cup Flour (all-purpose)
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt (table)
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Ginger
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1/2 cup Sour Cream
1 heaping cup Chocolate Chips (never skimp on the chocolate!)
3 – 4 medium Bananas (mashed, should equal approximately 1 1/4 cup once mashed)
Butter (for greasing pans)
Tip! For best results your bananas should be over ripe. If your bananas are getting old but you are not ready to make banana bread yet, toss them in the freezer without peeling them. When you are ready to make bread, pull them out and let them thaw on the counter for a couple of hours. Then peel, mash and make bread!
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Grease loaf pans. I use 9×5 normally, but have used other sizes, including disposable aluminum pans when I am making this to gift.
In a large bowl cream together the softened butter and sugar.
Add eggs, vanilla, lemon juice, and molasses. Mix well.
In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.
Add the dry mix to the butter mix. Combine until smooth.
Fold in sour cream, bananas and chocolate chips. Reserve a few chocolate chips.
Add to a loaf pan until about half full. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on the top.
Bake at 350F (175C) for approximately 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then pop it out of the loaf pan and let it finish cooling. Or if you can’t wait, dig in immediately! For us this is like cookies, so good warm right out of the oven!

What I love about this recipe is that the rich flavour lends itself to some wonderful changes to make it perfect for your preferences.
If you don’t like chocolate (sorry we can’t be friends anymore!), replace the chocolate chips with walnuts. This also gives it a nice crunch.
If you find the inside too soft (we love a crispy crust and soft middle), and want it more firm, increase the flour to 2 cups.
Want it extra punchy, increase the spices to give it a bit more kick! I love to play with spices, waiting for the kitchen fairies to tell me… STOP!
I am a firm believer in the quality of ingredients making or breaking a recipe. It doesn’t matter how good of a baker you are, if your ingredients are not top quality, your baking will suffer. To this end I love to use the best quality chocolate I can find. I also source my eggs from local farmers.
I hope you enjoy this Chocolate Banana Bread treat!
