I don’t know about your neck of the woods, but around here my skin has been so dry lately! In an effort to be more healthy, not only for myself, but also the planet, I decided it was time to make some of my own body butter. It turned out so amazing! So today I am sharing my DIY Lavender Body Butter recipe with you all.
DIY Body Butter with Lavender
So why go through all the hassle of making my own body butter? Well there are a few reasons I decided this was one DIY I needed to do.
My Health
First, I have become very aware of everything I am putting on my body. I have sensitive/allergic skin, and I have struggled with formulas constantly changing in products that I buy.
Just when I thought I had a great new body butter, something in the reciepe changes and once again I am covered in red splotches and hives.
It’s not pretty or fun.
By making it myself I am in control over the ingredients and can ensure they are of the best quality.
Environmentally Healthy
The other reason I like to make my own is to reduce waste and damage to the planet. I can ensure the ingredients I am using are ethically sourced. My containers are reused and recycled.
Simply make sure they are washed well and sanitized before refilling them. You can do this by boiling them or some dishwashers can sanitize jars too.
It is a small thing, but anything we can do to reduce our footprint helps.
Why Lavender?
Lavender is one of the most important essential oils in my kit. For me it is incredibly relaxing and helps me with my anxiety and insomnia. If lavender does not appeal to you, simply replace the essential oil with the one of your choice.
Lavender Body Butter Recipe
This recipe makes approximately 8 oz of body butter.
Supplies and Tools
¼ cup shea butter
¼ cup cocoa butter
¼ cup coconut oil
¼ cup sweet almond oil
25 drops lavender essential oil
Mixer (stand mixer or handheld)
Directions
To start, chop the cocoa butter into small pieces so it is easier to incorporate. Repeat with the shea butter.
Next, add the cocoa butter and shea butter to a large bowl or a stand mixer bowl if you are using the stand mixer.
Whip on high for 1 minute, using the wire whip attachment if using a stand mixer. Then whip on low for 4 minutes.
Add the coconut oil and sweet almond oil. Whip on high for another 1 minute, then on low for 4 minutes.
Pour the mixture into a glass bowl, and set the whole thing in the refrigerator for 1 hour to set up and chill.
Return the mixture to the large bowl or stand mixer.
Add your essential oils.
Whip on low for one minute, then whip on high for 5 minutes, until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Store in an airtight jar and enjoy the luxurious body butter as it nourishes your skin.
Using Body Butter
This Lavender Body Butter is perfect for using before bed. I also like to use it on my hands when I am about to head into a stressful situation. Simply take a bit from the jar on your fingers and rub it into your skin. Your dry skin will soak it right up, leaving it feeling moisturized, supple and healthy.
This DIY Body Butter is a great addition to your self care routine.
If you are making affirmations for strength, peace and overcoming anxiety, apply some of this body butter before making your affirmations. You can also carry some on you. Use it as needed throughout the day and the scent will help remind you of those affirmations.
