Amethyst Crystal Meaning and Properties
As a February baby, Amethyst was the first crystal I was drawn to as a teenager exploring the local metaphysical shops. It might also be the reason purple has always been my favourite colour. This stunning purple crystal has many uses and benefits, and even after all these years of rock hounding and crystal coveting, it is still the one that holds a special place in my heart.

Amethyst is a popular and readily available crystal that can be easily found at any crystal or metaphysical shop. Being such a popular stone, means that it tends to be very reasonably priced, making it a fantastic crystal for general use and those just starting their collections on a limited budget.
In fact, if you are looking for a large statement piece, an Amethyst Geode is a fantastic addition to a home or office, and can be quite reasonable. I have a large geode in my office to help maintain a sense of calm and positivity while working and creating.
Let’s dig into this gorgeous purple crystal and learn more about why it is so special.
History
The name “amethyst” derives from the Greek word “amethystos“, which means: a remedy against drunkenness. Because of its wine-like purple colours, early Greek mythology associated the gem with Bacchus, the god of wine. So next time you are heading out for some wine with friends, make sure you bring some Amethyst!
Or if you are working with Bacchus, this is an important crystal to use in your ritual work.
Need some help with business… or battle? Throughout history, Amethyst was used to keep the wearer clear headed and quick witted in battle and business affairs.
When it comes to love, this crystal was not left out. Renaissance Europeans thought it calmed lovers overrun by passion.
Most importantly, this stunning purple crystal has long been coveted by Royalty. From Alexander the Great to Catherine the Great, royals have long admired this crystal and held it in great esteem.
Amethyst can be found as raw pieces, large geodes, polished and even carved. I have a very cherished collection of carved pieces that include a dragon and some owls.

If you are looking to gift a special piece, it is traditionally given for the sixth wedding anniversary and is the birthstone of February.
Amethyst Benefits
This powerful and popular crystal is believed to have many metaphysical benefits.
Peace
Most notably, it can help calm and relieve stress. This makes it the perfect accessory for someone who wants to de-stress or find peace of mind. Something that was very important for me as a teenager dealing with all the teen years drama as a navigated high school. Very quickly and intuitively, I found that holding Amethyst and carrying it on me, helped me stay grounded and deal more effectively with stressors.
Protection
Amethyst is a crystal that has powerful protective properties. It can help ward against negative energy and psychic attacks. You can use Amethyst for protection while out in the world by keeping it in your purse or handbag bag or wearing it in jewelry. At home, place Amethyst in the areas where you spend a lot of time and want to create a protective, peace filled sanctuary.
Healing
When it comes to healing, Amethyst can be used in a number of different ways.
For cleansing, use it to cleanse your body or ritual items like tarot cards.
We all know how important sleep is when healing, Amethyst can help you sleep better at night and overcome insomnia with its calming properties. Simply place it under the pillow or bed (under where your head will rest), or on the night stand.
If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other mental health issues after undergoing trauma such as abuse or addiction, then amethyst can help as you move through the healing process.
Creativity and Strength
Amethyst is believed to aide in heightening intuition and creativity while simultaneously boosting one’s self-esteem and sense of inner strength. This can help the user find the confidence to follow their own path and express their true self in a situation.
Amethyst and the Chakras
Amethyst is a powerful stone with a strong connection to the Crown Chakra and the Third Eye Chakra.
The Crown Chakra is the seat of higher consciousness, bliss and wisdom, and connects us with our own divinity. Amethyst is a powerful spiritual stone, providing purifying, healing, and protective energies to help clear, open, and balance the Crown Chakra.
The Third Eye Chakra is the place of foresight and intuition. Amethyst is a crystal that helps open one’s mind and foster creativity. Aiding in the ability to see the big picture and move forward with confidence and strength.
Benefits of Wearing Amethyst
Amethyst is a very popular stone in jewelry, such as amulets, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and even brooches. I have even seen some stunning head wear such as crowns and our hand forged Amethyst hair pins over at Daelen Forge. Wearing this stunning purple crystal not only looks good, but it also offers benefits such as:
- Calming and relieving stress.
- Protecting against negative energy and psychic attacks.
- Protection for the wearer from unwanted energies such as negativity, anger, fear and depression.
- Heightening intuition and creativity.
- Boosting self-esteem and invigorating inner strength.
What Is An Amethyst Crystal Bath?
Want to try a truly luxurious way of incorporating Amethyst into your life? Try a Crystal Bath. This is a type of bath where Amethyst crystals will cleanse you physically, spiritually and emotionally, while the warm water soothes your body. It is a great idea to use after a particularly draining experience.
To experience this special bath, place a fairly good sized piece (about the size of your palm) on top of some rock salt at the bottom of your tub. Fill the bath with warm water. I highly recommend adding some lavender essential oil to heighten the benefits of this crystal bath.
Soak for 15 minutes and let the crystal infused waters cleanse and heal you. While soaking, meditate and use positive affirmations if you feel moved to do so.
After bathing, remove the crystals and rinse them with fresh water. Dry them completely, then place them in the moonlight to recharge them.
